BEERS OF THE MONTH AT CUBLEY HALL
Cubley Hall prides itself on offering its guests as wide a range of real ale as is possible. Here are the list of guest ales available from cask and bottle for the upcoming month with a brief description.
A famous Yorkshire brewing name, now made by Carlsberg. This pours a deep amber colour, with a tight, cream-coloured head. On the nose it has a pleasantly hoppy, sweet malt-edged aroma. On the palate the malt is the dominant character, and the beer is smooth and easy to drink, if a touch underpowered. There is a nice hoppy bitterness and a touch of smoky grain in the finish. A very decent drink without setting the heather on fire.
Bittersweet in mouth feel with a dry finish, packed with fruity notes and Goldings hops. We use plenty of choice Golding hops which give it a roast coffee maltiness followed by Black Sheep’s characteristic refreshingly dry and bitter finish. Masses of hops, orange-fruit and roast coffee maltiness. Black Sheep Ale is brewed with a large helping of Golding hops which lend a fruity flavour reminiscent of Seville oranges which, together with the warming full bodied malt flavour, stand up well to all red meats and most cheeses such as Wensleydale and Stilton.
Described by esteemed beer writer Roger Protz as… “The finest blonde beer I’ve drunk in many a year”, Harvest Pale is brewed with a gently-kilned malt, and an aromatic blend of American hops added during the brewing process gives this 3.8% alc pale beer exceptional poise. Its distinct hop flavour leads to a crisp finish. Harvest Pale has firmly established itself as Castle Rock’s Flagship Beer. SIBA National Champion Bitter 2004, Champion Bitter of Britain 2007 and Champion Beer of Britain 2010.
This is an amber coloured session beer in which biscuity malt character combines with honeyed almond hop tones to make a rich, full tasting beer, whilst a dash of oats in the grain bill adds a lovely silky mouth feel to the experience. UK grown Pilgrim hops and French Bouclier, give rise to the almost Belgian style hop palate that has a spicy, slightly sweet aroma.
This was the big 75cl, Champagne-style corked bottle of Duvel. It pours a bright gold with a steady stream of bubbles. Thanks to secondary fermentation in the bottle, it has one of the most dense, lathering white heads of any beer. The nose is lovely: a crisp and fruity melange of Asian pear, cloves and wheatbeer-like yeastiness with a hint of caramel and some floral aspects. On the palate it is dense and creamy, with a strapping, hoppy bitterness and a full-bodied, chewy complexity. It has sweetness, but it does not cloy, as the full, ripe pear fruit and green streak of hops dominates.
With deep black color, a thick, creamy head, rich chocolate, toffee and coffee flavors, and full-bodied smoothness, Anchor Porter® is the epitome of a handcrafted dark beer.
A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.
The little brother of Duvel, brewed at the Moortgat brewery, this is a pale gold beer that retains its thin, white head to the bottom of the glass. There's a little clove-like, spicy, wheat beer aroma, but otherwise it is fresh lemon and some crunchy apple fruit that dominates, with a higher note of hoppiness kicking in. On the palate this has quite a thick, rich texture, a certain sweetness of the malt and plentiful fruit character nicely offset by a big, tangy lemon acidity and a good level of hopping.
This Pale Ale style beer from Chicago pours quite a deep orangy/gold, with a cream-coloured, moderate head. On the nose there is a distinct note of dried apricot, and some aromatic, herb and floral qualities. There's a touch of lavender hand soap that is swept away by a toffeeish quality, and a hint of caramelised orange. On the palate the beer has a nice hoppy, spicy, bitter core, more of that dried apricot fruit and a weight of caramel malt. This is quite a full-bodied beer, and whilst some may find it a touch too sweet and perfumed, it has good length and a shed-load of interesting stuff going on in the glass.
